New York, NY—A well known Ohio-born songwriter and rock musician has written and recorded a new fight song for Ohio State University titled OH-IO (Nobody Beats the Bucks).
Steve Acker, guitarist for the highly popular 70s Northeast Ohio band LAW and a lifelong Buckeye fan, wrote the song just days after returning to his home in Youngstown after a 32 year absence. He had been living in Jackson, Mississippi and Nashville, Tennessee since leaving LAW in December 1977.
LAW performed countless shows in the Ohio club and concert circuit while in his 20s, throughout the 1970s, including frequent appearances in Columbus at University events and clubs like The Agora. The band recorded three albums, two of those for MCA Records under the sponsorship of The Who. They toured with and opened shows for many recording stars such as Bob Seger, Alice Cooper, The Who, Boston, Bad Company, Genesis, Jethro Tull, and Kiss.
“OSU fans are the most enthusiastic supporters of their school of any University in the nation,” Acker says. “As a songwriter I believe in the power of a song to motivate and inspire and I saw this as an opportunity to create a song that might boost team spirit and give the fans something new to sing about. The school’s current theme song, Hang On Sloopy, is a song I played in my very first band, but its lyrics are not about the school at all. I felt that OSU needed its own theme song."
The record, as performed by his new band Blast Furnace and sung by Acker and Youngstown songwriter and recording artist Ryan Ross, is "a contemporary, high energy dance track that fits right in to current radio formats and club environments," as Acker describes it. “You could play this record right beside any contemporary hit recording artist,” he explains.
